Comparing Yourself to Others Needs to Stop

It’s a common problem in today’s modern digital age to compare ourselves to others. The popular mobile application Instagram offers glimpses into other’s lives. Lives that sometimes may be better than our own. This can create feelings of envy, lower self-esteem, poorer mental health, and greater body shame. Teen Vogue even wrote an article on how “Instagram is Terrible For Your Mental Health” back in 2017.

The Mental Health issues associated with social media are so pervasive that artists like DEAN have sung songs about it in his song “Instagram” which you can view below.

Keep reading and I’ll show you how you can stop comparing yourself to others and reclaim your mental health and happiness!

It’s totally normal to compare yourself to others

In our lifetimes there will be many times when we compare ourselves to others. It’s very easy to see the negative aspects of our lives and feel like we’re “falling behind” our neighbors, friends, and family.

The important thing to realize though is that focusing on other’s lives at the expense of our own is simply a waste of time.

It’s 100% natural to compare ourselves to others as its a natural human tendency. Although it’s natural, it’s best not to go overboard.

The first thing you need to do to stop comparing yourself to others is to find out the root cause of this behavior. One example is the human need to feel significant. To “feel like they’re someone important”.

Evaluating your worth by social comparison is just setting yourself up for a lifetime of disappointment because there will always be someone that’s “better looking, wealthier, more charismatic, etc.” If you continue to think in this mindset of constant social comparison you won’t be able to move forward in life. You’ll be stuck in a rut and that’s not a place where you want to be.

Society feeds off of our need to feel significant

You must stop buying into the idea that you aren’t enough, because YOU ARE ENOUGH! Comparing only breeds envy, depression, and a lack of self-confidence.

Give weight to your other needs that have a bigger positive impact than negative. There’s a saying, “It is better to give than to receive”.

Focusing on growth, contribution, or love are three areas that will make you feel happier and put you into the mindset towards feeling content with your situation and place in life.

Lastly, a digital detox can do wonders to improving your mental health. While not a permanent solution, it will give you the downtime necessary to evaluate your own life and find fulfilling things to do instead of being glued to your computer or mobile phone screen.

“You have your own destiny to fulfill. Your life has meaning and you’re going to do the best you can to make it worthwhile!”

Are you ready to take control of your life and to stop comparing yourself to others?

The sooner you do, the more you can see what is really working well in your life and be grateful for the “little things” that make you happy. You have your own destiny to fulfill. Your life has meaning and you’re going to do the best you can to make it worthwhile! Never forget that and good luck!
