The Internet has given us so many opportunities

When writing this PureVPN review, I suddenly remembered myself when I was a kid. As a kid, I never would have thought that working remotely was possible. It was such a foreign concept. Nowadays more and more people are becoming Digital Nomads and/or working remotely. The internet has become essential for our livelihoods.

When the internet first became mainstream, the only thing I used it for was to download Buffy the Vampire Slayer wallpapers onto 3.5″ Floppy Disks at the local library and do research projects. There were dangers on the internet that were taken very seriously in the mid 90s. One of them was “meeting people online”. I grew up in a generation where we didn’t talk to strangers. The world has changed since then. Meeting people online is commonplace and one of the biggest worries people have now is “being ghosted“. But today I’m here to talk about my PureVPN Review. Let’s get started!

The internet is our livelihood

Digital nomads and remote workers rely on the internet to do almost everything that’s essential to making a living. Everything from e-mailing clients to uploading finished projects relies on it. There is a hidden danger when we use public WIFI connections in cafés, airports, and any other public place though. Our devices are at-risk of being hacked with each connection that we make, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You can install a VPN on your device to protect yourself. A VPN or Virtual Private Network, is a connection method used to add security and privacy to private and public networks. It allows you to protect sensitive data and hide your IP address to protect your privacy when searching the internet and/or downloading files. PureVPN is a cost-effective provider that won’t hurt your wallet.

Setup and interface

Once you’ve paid for an account you’ll be e-mailed a username and password. You can use these credentials to log into the service on up to five devices at the same time which is really convenient for those of us juggling through multiple devices throughout our work day.

PureVPN works on Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android.

For this PureVPN review, I decided to test it on PC and Android. MacOS simply works most of the time 😉

Privacy and Logging

PureVPN makes a big deal out of its ‘zero log’ policy which means that they don’t keep records of what you do online. In October 2017 there was a report of a man being arrested on suspicion of conducting an extensive “cyberstalking campaign”. It turned out that PureVPN did keep some kind of logs at the time. In response to this criticism from privacy advocates they updated their privacy policy in which they state: “We DO NOT keep any record of your browsing activities, connection logs, records of the VPN IPs assigned to you, your original IPs, your connection time, the history of your browsing, the sites you visited, your outgoing traffic, the content or data you accessed, or the DNS queries generated by you.” The policy states that there’s  minimal connection data that it does record such as the day you connected to a specific VPN location and from which Internet Service Provider. They’ve come a long way to regain the trust of their customers and I’ll give them credit for being transparent and covering concerns in a clear and readable way in their updated privacy policy.

In my personal tests for this PureVPN Review, I tested internet speeds and my speed performance on a 400mbps/15mps connection. My results were that my connection was roughly half on download speed and upload speed. Below are a couple of screenshots of this testing.

Spectrum Speed Test

Speed Test

I also tried to download a large 7.70GB video on Utorrent which gave me speeds of about 4.1MB/s which is totally adequate for me. Now if the speed was 1MB/s I’d be a bit worried and would most likely close my laptop screen. Thankfully the speeds were consistent and worked just fine.

4MB Download Speed

Next I tried downloading multiple video files with Utorrent. Just for fun. I REALLY wanted to saturate my VPN bandwidth pipeline. This time my speeds were even higher! Reaching up to 7.4MB/s at peak! However the speed fluctuated and mostly hovered around 6MB/s which is still good!

7.4MB Per Second with Utorrent downloading multiple large files!

Does PureVPN work with Netflix?

Accessing Netflix has been an ongoing issue for most VPN providers. I was able to access Netflix just fine for this PureVPN review. If you do experience issues, be sure to contact PureVPN support via the livechat on their site. No PureVPN review would be worth it unless Netflix was tested! I had no issues due to being way over the 25Mbps recommendation for Netflix’s Ultra HD or 4K streaming. You may however be in a country with less than stellar internet connection speeds. So I’ve included Netflix’s recommendations below.

Netflix’s Recommendations:

  • 0.5 Mbps for any streaming
  • 3 Mbps for SD or DVD quality
  • 5 Mbps for HD quality
  • 25 Mbps for Ultra HD/4K quality

PureVPN Review Final Verdict: Works great!

PureVPN was very easy to use and intuitive on both desktop and mobile (Android). It’s a feature-rich VPN with various modes depending on your needs. There’s a wide selection of countries and cities to choose from and I’m able to download large files with ease. For my needs it works great! I hope this PureVPN review gave you a better understanding on VPNs. They are a great tool to protect your privacy and secure your files.
