How to maintain your sense of purpose while working remotely can be especially tough. According to the 2019 State of the Digital Workspace report from Igloo, 70% of remote employees felt left out of the workplace. Many of remote workers nowadays feel that there is a gap between their work and their organization’s mission. In the report it was mentioned that there is a huge problem in that there is a lack of workplace knowledge sharing and communication practices. Sharing knowledge and effective communication is absolutely essential for remote work. It’s no surprise that when there are glaring issues and a lack of a sense of purpose… remote workers can easily become disengaged which undermines their performance and career growth. It’s critical for remote workers to find meaning in their work. Here are three ways on how to maintain your sense of purpose while working remotely from home.

1. Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues

Don't be afraid to ask your colleagues
Ask questions if you’re in doubt!

If you are told to do something but it’s unclear to you, don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or help from colleagues. For example, if your manager asks you to conduct a report and you’re unclear on how it will help them, your team, or your client, you can always ask them to clarify the reasoning behind it. Knowing the importance of the work that you do gives it meaning and will help you to do better work. So when you wonder about how to maintain your sense of purpose while working remotely next time, be sure to inquire about the purpose behind requests, tasks, or projects that are given to you.

2. Be appreciative of what you have and your current situation

Be appreciative of what you have and your current situation
Appreciate what you have.

Recognize that the work that you do is a privilege and that you should appreciate your role, the work that you’re doing, and the organization that allows you to contribute to a greater purpose. You are making an impact that affects those in and outside of your organization. You are also making an impact on your livelihood by earning a salary that allows you to provide for yourself and for others. If you can truly understand and appreciate the bigger picture of what your role entails, that can sometimes be enough to help you remember how to maintain a sense of purpose while working remotely.

Let’s imagine your boss gave you a task that you thought was a bit mundane or uninteresting. Initially, it’s a task that you normally dread taking care of. You think that it will take up a lot of time and it makes you feel negatively towards the task even more. Now, change your perspective on the task. Think of all of the job seekers that would do anything to have the job role that you have. Imagine how that task when it’s completed will help the company deliver delight to your customers. You may not enjoy every aspect of your job, but changing your perspective will make you appreciate what you truly have and the importance of your work.

3. Reflect and make your own connection to yourself

Reflect and make your own connection to yourself
Reflect and connect with your inner-self

If appreciating your work and role in your company isn’t enough and you don’t want to ask what the purpose of a task is, then determine and create your own purpose for doing what you do. For the task mentioned earlier, think of the goals laid out by your boss or client. Read your company’s mission statement. You can start to find meaning in your work when you reflect and connect the dots of why you and your company are doing what you’re doing.

When you can understand this, you’ll be able to better communicate with your coworkers and clients. This is because companies and clients don’t want someone investing time and money in work that has no purpose. It’s a waste of resources and time to do so. There should always be a reason on why you are doing the type of work that you’re doing. Figure out its purpose if you don’t know it.

You may be wondering, why is it important to know how to maintain your sense of purpose while working remotely? It’s important because career advancement can hinge on the ability to do meaningful work. If there is no apparent purpose, make it clear to yourself after some time for reflection. Ask your boss or your coworkers the purpose of the work that you do and what keeps them going. Appreciate where you are and take the initiative to identify the meaning of your work. In doing so, you’ll propel your career and most of all, you’ll finally realize your purpose. And most of all, stop comparing yourself to others. There is a plan and purpose for everyone, including you!
