Boost Your Immune System & Change Your Diet
Research suggests that those who lack social connections are more likely to suffer from physical and mental health problems. You’ll want to avoid fatty foods and foods that are high in carbohydrates. These kinds of foods will make you feel inactive. Foods that are lean proteins contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids that can boost your mood. While working from home, exercising is a great opportunity to reduce cabin fever. You can do simple things like taking a small walk around the neighborhood or walking your dog (if you have one). You’ll get some much-needed Vitamin D which will help improve your mood while being outdoors. Be sure to wear season-appropriate attire and don’t forget your keys! Take up an Indoor Hobby
If you really want to learn how to avoid cabin fever, think of taking up an indoor hobby. By working remotely at home, you now have the chance to try out a new hobby. You can build a birdhouse, read that novel you always wanted to read (4-Hour Work Week), etc. It’s always fun to learn something new and having a hobby that’s not work-related can help to uplift your spirits and reduce stress.
Maintain Social Contact
One of the major reasons why people that work remotely feel isolated and anxious is that they can’t draw support from the people that matter to them most: friends and family. This is especially true for Digital Nomads that live abroad who are far away from them. People want to share their worries and concerns with people because we are social creatures. Maybe we won’t want to talk to our parents but maybe we want to talk to the friends we grew up with. You can video chat with friends or simply call them on your phone. You’ll almost always end the conversation in good spirits!
We all love watching and binging on Netflix but if you do too much of it you can slow down your metabolism. As tempting as it is to enjoy a good drama or tv series, activities that don’t engage the brain and body could actually leave you feeling depressed. I experienced this whenever I thought of long dramas that I’ve watched. “If only I had used that time to learn, I could have learned another skillset to make myself more valuable to employers/customers.” Sometimes when I did waste time binge-watching a tv series, I wished that I spread it out so that I could enjoy the story a bit more. It’s like eating all your chocolate on Halloween, getting a stomachache and then regretting it afterward. I think it’s fine to watch the latest shows on Netflix, but it’s important to watch things in moderation.
Open Your Shades
For many of us that work remotely, we could use a little sunlight. Your surroundings will be a bit brighter and your room will be nice and toasty. Another hack to this is to keep your window open. There’s nothing like fresh air circulating in your room!
Buy Some Plants
You can bring life into your living space with houseplants! They are an excellent solution when it comes to how to avoid cabin fever because the color and energy of a living plant can invigorate you with the oxygen that it produces and its ability to filter your air of any toxins. Orchids and flowers can increase your happiness after watering them. Knowing that you provide life to something else is a wonderful feeling and is a routine that will start your day off right!
Keep Your Living Space Tidy
A cluttered living space will leave you feeling cramped and uncomfortable. Remove items from your home that you don’t need. As Marie Kondo says, “Does it Spark Joy?” We live in an age of Consumerism and many of us have become hoarders. You can donate or sell things that you no longer need while cleaning your living space. You’ll feel much better afterward and may even have more space to relax!
Structure Your Day
Self-isolation while working remotely can lead to mild mental health issues like not being able to cope with stress, restlessness, and feeling demotivated. To combat this, it’s important to maintain a structure to your day. Have a set schedule for the times you eat and set a bedtime to help you stay on track. By having a routine with your activities and goals set, you’ll be able to stay motivated throughout the day as you successfully complete and achieve them.
Learn a Practical Skill
A good use of your time is to learn a practical skill. Skillshare, Udemy, and Springboard are all online learning platforms that can teach you new skills. These skills can range from hobbies like Photography all the way to Web Development, Programming, UX Design, etc. By learning a practical skill in your free time, you can feel more accomplished and it can be a great use of your time that will actually improve your livelihood and well-being.
